The province’s police watchdog is investigating after three pedestrians were hit by a vehicle in Oshawa early Sunday.

Around 2:45 a.m., police got a call about a vehicle driving erratically near King Street West and Park Road. They said when they caught up with it, the driver sped away.

During a brief chase, the driver lost control and hit three pedestrians near the Oshawa Centre at King and Stevenson Road South.

A 39-year-old man, a 28-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were taken to Lakeridge Health Oshawa with serious injuries. The 39-year-old man was later transferred to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto in critical condition.

“The truck actually started skidding, and turned itself around and hit (them). The people went flying,” one witness told CityNews.

Police said they arrested three Whitby boys — two 13-year-olds and one 15-year-old — as the youths tried to run away from the scene.

Two of the accused have been released to their parents. The other is being held until a court appearance Monday morning when formal charges could be laid. It’s not yet clear when the other two will appear before a judge.

At a news conference on Sunday morning, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said its unfair to call the episode a joy ride. They said a black pickup truck at the scene was involved, but wouldn’t confirm it was the one that hit the pedestrians.

The intersection remains closed for the investigation and is expected to clear around 3 p.m.

The SIU investigates all cases involving police when someone has died, has been seriously hurt or brings forward allegations of sexual assault.
